PSS-10 Stress Test: Free Online Perceived Stress Scale Screening
Articles are prepared using evidence-based sources and clinical editorial standards.
Feeling overloaded, tense, or like life has been unpredictable for weeks? The PSS-10 (Perceived Stress Scale) measures how stressful your life has felt over the past month — not just how many stressors you have on paper. On LuriaLab you can take the free PSS-10 stress test online in a few minutes, anonymously, with instant scoring and clear severity bands.
What Is the PSS-10?
The Perceived Stress Scale was developed by Cohen, Kamarck, and Mermelstein (1983) and is one of the most cited stress measures in psychology and health research. The 10-item version asks how often you felt upset, unable to control important things, nervous, or on top of things during the past month. Each item is rated 0–4 (never to very often). Items 4, 5, 7, and 8 are reverse-scored so that higher totals always mean greater perceived stress. The total ranges from 0–40.
PSS-10 Score Ranges
- 0–13: Low perceived stress
- 14–26: Moderate perceived stress
- 27–40: High perceived stress
These bands are commonly used reference ranges for screening and self-monitoring. The PSS-10 is not a diagnosis — it describes how stressed you have felt lately. A high score is a signal to protect recovery, reduce load where you can, and consider professional or workplace support.
Who Should Take a PSS-10 Screening?
Adults who feel chronically pressured, burnt out, or unsure whether their stress level is “normal.” It is also useful for tracking stress before/after life changes, exams, caregiving, or job strain. If stress comes with strong worry or low mood, add anxiety or depression screens as well.
PSS-10 vs DASS-21, GAD-7, and Burnout Screens
- PSS-10 — global perceived stress over the past month
- DASS-21 — depression, anxiety, and stress subscales over the past week
- GAD-7 — generalized anxiety symptoms over the past two weeks
- OLBI — work-related burnout (exhaustion and disengagement)
PSS focuses on your appraisal of stress (unpredictable, uncontrollable, overloaded). DASS stress items lean more toward tension and difficulty relaxing. For workplace exhaustion, see our burnout screening guide and the glossary entry on stress.
Can You Trust an Online PSS-10 Test?
Yes, when it uses the standard 10 items, reverse scoring, and 0–40 total. Answer about the past month honestly — including both tough days and calmer ones. LuriaLab applies official-style scoring automatically so you see low / moderate / high bands and a downloadable report.
What to Do After Your Results
- Note your band and which items felt most true (control, nervousness, coping).
- Protect basics — sleep, meals, movement, and short recovery breaks often help first.
- Reduce one demand this week if your score is moderate or high (delegate, renegotiate, or pause).
- Screen related symptoms — GAD-7, PHQ-9, or OLBI if worry, mood, or work exhaustion overlap.
- Seek support if high stress persists — GP, counsellor, EAP, or a mental health professional.
