Emotional Intelligence

Emotional intelligence (EI) is the ability to perceive, understand, use, and manage emotions — in yourself and others — to guide thinking and behavior.

Definition

Emotional intelligence describes a set of emotional skills including recognizing emotions, understanding what they mean, using them to support thinking, and regulating them effectively. Unlike a fixed trait, these skills can be developed. The SSEIT measures self-reported emotional intelligence.

What it can feel like

  • Noticing and naming your own emotions.
  • Reading how others are feeling.
  • Staying calm and adaptive under pressure.
  • Using emotions to guide decisions constructively.
