Autistic Traits
Autistic traits are characteristics associated with the autism spectrum — such as social communication differences, focused interests, and sensory sensitivities — that vary widely between individuals.
Definition
Autistic traits exist on a continuum across the whole population. Having some traits does not mean a person is autistic; a clinically significant number and level of traits, causing impact, may warrant assessment. The Autism Spectrum Quotient (AQ) measures the strength of these traits in adults.
What it can feel like
- Preferring deep focus on specific interests.
- Finding small talk or social nuance effortful.
- Valuing routine and predictability.
- Noticing patterns and details others miss.

Veelgestelde vragen
Does having autistic traits mean I am autistic?
Not necessarily. Traits are common across the population. A high trait score suggests further assessment may be worthwhile, but only a clinician can diagnose autism.
What AQ score is significant?
Scores of 32 or higher are often used in research to indicate clinically significant autistic traits. Your report shows the total and interpretation.
